The Great Wall Museum in Beijing, was opened in 1994 in the vicinity of the Badaling Pass on its western side, which is seventy miles northwest of the city. This part of the Great Wall was built during the Ming Dynasty around 1505 and consists of foundation stones with a core of pounded earth and a brick face. The wall is so thick that five or six horses can ride side by side on the top. It is the part of the Great Wall that is the most popular with visitors and tourists and has been authentically reconstructed. The Great Wall Museum is housed in a modern-looking building that is modeled on Qing Dynasty architecture. It has a three thousand square meter exhibition hall that is divided into several individual rooms.
On permanent exhibition are the Great Wall, the Ming Dynasty’s section of the Great Wall, the building and fortifications, and information and artifacts regarding the military, political and cultural significance of these things. The Great Wall of China is known as changcheng, which means long wall. It is considered one of the wonders of the world, as it is the longest wall on Earth and is as long as the Nile River. It contained forty thousand watch towers and entire armies could traverse along the top of it to get from one place to another.
